The name “Mansi Ganga” derives from the Sanskrit word “manasa” (मानस) – meaning “of the mind” or “born from the mind.” The sacred lake was, according to Hindu tradition, created by Lord Krishna using his divine will and mind – not through a physical act, but through the power of his intention.
Two primary mythological accounts are associated with the creation of Mansi Ganga:
The Arishtasur lila: When Lord Krishna defeated the demon Arishtasur – a bull-shaped asura sent by King Kansa – the sacred weapons (including the sudarshana chakra, which had touched the demon) needed to be purified. To cleanse himself and the Brajwasis after this battle, Krishna manifested the Ganga at this spot in Govardhan using his divine mind, so that the sacred purifying waters of the Ganga could flow in Braj without requiring the devotees to travel to the actual river.
The devotional interpretation: In the Braj Vaishnava tradition, Lord Krishna’s love for the Brajwasis was so complete that he did not want them to have to travel far to receive the merit of a Ganga dip. Mansi Ganga is where the Govardhan Parikrama begins – and most visitors who want to do the Parikrama don’t realise they should arrive by 5:30 AM. The full 21 km Govardhan Parikrama on foot takes 5-7 hours. Starting at 5:30 AM means completing it by 11:00-12:30 PM – before the intense summer heat arrives. Pilgrims who start at 9:00 AM in May will find themselves walking in 43°C heat by 1:00 PM. Experience My India always begins the Parikrama at 5:30 AM for groups doing it on foot.
The Mansi Ganga evening Aarti is significantly more intimate than most pilgrims expect – and more moving for it. It is not a production with multiple priests, organised seating and amplified music.
