After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through Vrindavan since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows about the Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari route:

The 2.5 km distance can feel like much more during peak hours. Vrindavan’s lanes near Banke Bihari are among the narrowest and most congested in all of Braj. During festivals (Holi, Janmashtami, Kartik month), the 12-minute auto journey can stretch to 30-45 minutes. Weekends are also significantly more crowded than weekdays. If you are visiting during any festival period, depart Prem Mandir for Banke Bihari no later than 9:00 AM.

The e-rickshaw is always faster than the auto in the final 500 metres. Autos cannot enter some of the narrowest lanes near Banke Bihari Mandir and must stop 100-200 metres short. E-rickshaws can go slightly further. On foot from the auto stop to Banke Bihari entrance is still 2-5 minutes of lane walking. This is standard practice – every driver knows the drop point.

Banke Bihari’s 5:30 PM summer evening opening is not reliably punctual. The temple’s curtain system means darshan can technically “begin” at 5:30 PM but the actual open-curtain moments during the first 30-45 minutes of the evening session are irregular. Walking from Prem Mandir to Banke Bihari in summer afternoon (12-5 PM) is not recommended. The stone lanes of Vrindavan’s inner town reflect significant heat and bare feet on temple approaches become uncomfortable. If you choose to walk, do it in the morning or after 5:30 PM.
