ToggleDelhi to Govardhan – The Sacred Hill Lord Krishna Lifted
Govardhan is the sacred hill in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, that Lord Krishna is believed to have lifted on His little finger to shelter the residents of Braj from Indra’s wrath. In the Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana), the Govardhan Leela is one of Lord Krishna’s most celebrated childhood pastimes and the hill – revered as Giriraj Govardhan – has been a pilgrimage site for thousands of years.
For Delhi-based pilgrims and tourists, Govardhan is one of the most accessible Braj pilgrimage sites – approximately 169-171 km by road on NH 44, taking roughly 3 hours 39 minutes by car. It is easily combined with Mathura and Vrindavan in a single day from Delhi or as part of a 2-3 day Braj circuit.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through the Braj pilgrimage circuit including Govardhan. This guide covers the fastest route, all transport options, toll charges, the Govardhan parikrama guide and a complete one-day Delhi → Govardhan itinerary.
Distance Overview – All Routes at a Glance
| Route | Distance | Travel Time | Notes |
| Via NH 44 (fastest) | 169 km | 3 hrs 39 min | Fastest route; avoids slowdowns; has tolls |

| Via NH 148NA + NH 44 + Govardhan Rd | 171 km | 3 hrs 41 min | Minor variation; similar time to Route 1 |

Travel by Train
Train is the most economical option for solo travelers and couples from Delhi to Govardhan.
Step 1 – Delhi to Mathura Junction by Train
| Detail | Information |
| Departure stations | New Delhi (NDLS), Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM), Delhi Junction (DLI) |
| Arrival station | Mathura Junction (MTJ) |
| Distance | 145-150 km by rail |
| Travel time | 2 – 2.5 hours (express trains) |
| Frequency | 20+ trains daily; frequent service on this route |
| Fare | ₹80-₹200 (2S/Sleeper); ₹350-₹700 (AC 3-Tier) |
Fast trains on this route include Shatabdi Express, Gatimaan Express and various Superfast trains. Check IRCTC for current schedules and book 7-14 days ahead for popular morning trains.
Step 2 – Mathura Junction to Govardhan
| Mode | Distance | Time | Cost |
| Auto-rickshaw (private) | 25 km | 35-45 min | ₹300 – ₹500 |
| Shared taxi / jeep | 25 km | 40-50 min | ₹50-₹100 per person |
| Pre-booked cab | 25 km | 30-40 min | ₹500 – ₹700 |
How far is Mathura from Govardhan? Approximately 22-25 km – 35-45 minutes by auto or cab. This is an important detail most Delhi travel guides skip: Govardhan is NOT in Mathura town. It requires a separate local journey after arriving at Mathura Junction. Experience My India pre-books the Mathura Junction → Govardhan transfer for all train-based trips. Call +91-7302265809.
Travel by Bus
UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) and private operators run bus services from Delhi to Mathura, with local transport onward to Govardhan.
| Detail | Information |
| Route | Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate / Anand Vihar) → Mathura, then local |
| Travel time | 3.5 – 5 hours (Delhi to Mathura) + 45 min local |
| Fare | ₹200 – ₹500 (Delhi to Mathura) + ₹50-₹100 (Mathura to Govardhan) |
| Booking | UPSRTC website, redBus, Anand Vihar ISBT counter |
When to use bus: Budget solo travelers; those who enjoy journey travel. Not recommended for families with elderly pilgrims or children for this specific Govardhan circuit – the multi-leg journey (Delhi bus → Mathura → local auto to Govardhan) adds complexity and total time (5-7 hours). A direct cab from Delhi (3 hrs 39 min) is significantly faster and more comfortable. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for cab alternatives.
Reverse Route – Govardhan to Delhi Distance
| Route | Distance | Time | Notes |
| Via NH 44 (fastest) | 171 km | 3 hrs 40 min | Same highway; standard reverse route |
| Via Govardhan Rd + NH 44 | 179 km | 4 hrs 29 min | Longer; avoid |
| Via Yamuna Expressway | 182 km | 3 hrs 49 min | Useful during NH 44 heavy traffic |
Important: The reverse route (Govardhan → Delhi) via NH 44 is 171 km (2 km more than the Delhi → Govardhan direction due to one-way approach roads near Govardhan town). The Yamuna Expressway option (182 km, 3 hrs 49 min) is worth considering on Sunday evenings when NH 44 has heavy return traffic from Mathura-Vrindavan. Experience My India advises on the best return route based on the day and time. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Govardhan Parikrama Guide
The Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation of Giriraj Govardhan hill) is the central devotional activity for pilgrims visiting Govardhan – and it comes in two forms.
Vehicle Parikrama (Recommended for Day Trippers from Delhi)
| Detail | Information |
| Circuit length | 21 km |
| Time by cab/auto | 1 – 1.5 hours (stopping at key sites) |
| Time by e-rickshaw | 1.5 – 2 hours |
| Stops included | Daan Ghati → Mansi Ganga → Mukharavind → Radha Kund → Kusum Sarovar |
| Cost (auto/e-rick) | ₹400 – ₹700 for the full circuit |
Vehicle parikrama is the practical choice for Delhi day-trippers – it covers all major sacred sites within 1.5-2 hours, leaving time to continue to Mathura and Vrindavan in the afternoon.
Walking Parikrama (For Devoted Pilgrims)
| Detail | Information |
| Circuit length | 21 km |
| Time on foot | 5 – 7 hours at a comfortable pace |
| Start point | Daan Ghati Temple (Govardhan town) |
| Best time to start | Before 5 AM in summer; before 6 AM in winter |
| Tradition | Pilgrims walk barefoot; some do dandavat pranam (full prostrations) |
Walking parikrama is done barefoot by many devotees and is spiritually considered the highest form of Govardhan worship. For Delhi day-trippers who want to do the walking parikrama, plan for an overnight stay in Govardhan – the walking circuit alone takes most of the day. Experience My India can arrange Govardhan accommodation on request. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Best Time to Visit Govardhan from Delhi
| Season | Weather | Crowd | Verdict |
| October – March | 8°C – 28°C | Moderate-High | ✅ Best: comfortable for parikrama and outdoor sites |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Oct/Nov 2026 | Very High | ✅ The most significant festival AT Govardhan – book 2 months ahead |
| Janmashtami | September 2026 | Very High (Mathura/Vrindavan) | ✅ Good energy; Govardhan less crowded than Mathura on this day |
| Kartik Month (Oct-Nov 2026) | 10°C – 26°C | High | ✅ Most auspicious for Braj parikrama |
| Summer (April-June) | 35°C – 46°C | Low | ⚠️ Walking parikrama not recommended; vehicle parikrama only before 9 AM or after 5 PM |
| Monsoon (July-September) | 27°C – 35°C | Low | ⚠️ Govardhan kunds full and green; road to Radha Kund can be muddy |
October to February is the ideal window for both the parikrama and the extended Braj circuit. Govardhan Puja (Annakut) – celebrated the day after Diwali – is the most significant festival at Govardhan itself, when the hill is worshipped with a massive offering of 56 food items. Experience My India advises on all festival booking windows. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Delhi to Govardhan
After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through the Braj circuit since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows about the Delhi → Govardhan journey:
169 km sounds close, but NH 44 near Mathura on weekends adds 30-60 minutes reliably. The Google Maps estimate of 3 hrs 39 min assumes normal traffic. On Saturdays and Sundays, the NH 44 approach to Mathura (the final 20-30 km) is consistently congested from 9 AM to 1 PM with Braj-bound traffic. Departing Delhi before 6:30 AM on weekends is the single most effective way to avoid this.
Govardhan is 22-25 km BEYOND Mathura Junction – not in Mathura. This is the most consistent planning error for first-time visitors. Many pilgrims arrive at Mathura Junction thinking they are at Govardhan. Govardhan is a separate town 35-45 minutes further. Budget this into your total travel time: Delhi to Govardhan by train is Delhi → Mathura (2 hours) + Mathura → Govardhan (35-45 min) = approximately 2 hrs 45 min minimum.
The walking parikrama (21 km) is not compatible with a Delhi day trip. Walking pilgrims start at 4-5 AM and finish by noon or afternoon. If you want to do the walking parikrama from Delhi, plan for an overnight stay at Govardhan or Mathura. The vehicle parikrama (1-1.5 hours in a cab) is the practical alternative for day-trippers.
Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar are genuinely separate from Govardhan town. Most one-day Govardhan trip guides from Delhi include “Radha Kund” on the itinerary without specifying that it is 4-5 km from Govardhan town, adding 20-30 minutes to the circuit. The vehicle parikrama naturally covers this – on foot from Govardhan town, it is a significant additional walk.
