The best places to visit near the Taj Mahal include Mehtab Bagh (1 km, sunset garden view), Agra Fort (2.1 km, Red Fort where Shah Jahan was imprisoned), Itmad-ud-Daulah – the “Baby Taj” (2.3 km), Fatehpur Sikri (38 km, Akbar’s deserted sandstone city) and Shilpgram (500 m, crafts village). Agra Is More Than the Taj Mahal – But the Taj Is Where It Starts

Most visitors to the Taj Mahal spend 2-3 hours at the monument and then wonder what to do next. Agra has a genuine answer – the city and its immediate surroundings contain some of the most significant Mughal heritage sites in the world, with Agra Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right), the architecturally influential Baby Taj (Itmad-ud-Daulah) and the deserted imperial city of Fatehpur Sikri all within reach of the same day.

Within walking distance or a short auto-rickshaw ride, you can see Mehtab Bagh’s famous sunset view of the Taj across the Yamuna, walk through Shilpgram’s artisan village and stroll the Taj Nature Walk. A full Agra day comfortably holds 5-7 of these 15 places depending on your start time and pace.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through Uttar Pradesh – including Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan combined on the same circuit. This guide covers all 15 places near the Taj Mahal with exact distances, verified entry fees and a one-day sequencing that maximises your Agra visit.

Within Walking Distance (0-1.5 km)

Shilpgram (500 m)

A crafts and cultural village approximately 500 metres from the Taj Mahal’s eastern gate. Shilpgram showcases local Agra artisans – marble carvers, weavers and leather craftspeople – in a village-style setting. Cultural performances are held on weekends. A good 30-45 minute stop either before or after your Taj visit.

Practical note: Free entry or minimal fee. Best visited in the morning before peak Taj crowds arrive or in the late afternoon when the crafts demonstrations are more active.

Taj Nature Walk (850 m)

A green forest trail approximately 850 metres from the Taj’s eastern side, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. The trail provides distant views of the Taj Mahal through the tree line – a calmer, less crowded perspective than the main complex. Entry: ₹50-₹100 per person.

Mehtab Bagh (1 km across the river)

A formal Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal – the spot from which the Taj’s marble dome is framed with the river in the foreground. This is the most-photographed view of the Taj from the outside and it is best at sunset when the dome catches the golden hour light. Distance from the South Gate of the Taj is approximately 1 km, reached by crossing the Yamuna via the road bridge.

Entry: ₹300 (Indian), ₹600 (foreign). Allow 45-60 minutes. Arrive 1 hour before sunset for the best light.

Short Ride Away (2-6 km)

Agra Fort (2.1 km)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most significant place to visit near the Taj Mahal beyond the monument itself. Built initially by Akbar and expanded by his descendants, Agra Fort is a 94-hectare red sandstone fortress containing palaces, halls and mosques. Shah Jahan spent the last years of his life imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb – he could see the Taj Mahal in the distance from his tower.

Entry: ₹40 (Indian), ₹600 (foreign). Allow 2-3 hours. Open sunrise to sunset (closed Friday for public).

Itmad-ud-Daulah – The Baby Taj (2.3 km)

A white marble tomb built by Empress Noor Jahan for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg, completed in 1628. Architectural historians consider Itmad-ud-Daulah a transitional monument – it is the first Mughal structure to use inlaid marble work (pietra dura) extensively, a technique that was later used on a much larger scale in the Taj Mahal itself.

Entry: ₹30 (Indian), ₹310 (foreign). Allow 1 hour. Significantly less crowded than the Taj or Agra Fort.

Kalakriti Cultural & Convention Center (2.3 km)

A theatre hosting a live cultural show narrating the history of the Taj Mahal and Mughal India through performance, music and projection. The show is approximately 1 hour and runs multiple times daily. A good option for the evening after a full day of monument visits. Show tickets: enquire locally for current pricing.

Jama Masjid (2.5 km)

One of Agra’s most significant mosques, located directly across from the Agra Fort entrance. Built by Shah Jahan in 1648, dedicated to his eldest daughter Jahanara Begum. Entry is free for visitors who are respectfully dressed; the mosque is an active place of worship.

Chini Ka Rauza (3 km)

The tomb of Afzal Khan, a minister in Shah Jahan’s court, completed in 1639. The distinctive feature is the external cladding of coloured Persian-style glazed tiles – “chini” refers to Chinese porcelain-style tiles. The building is unusual in Agra’s generally red sandstone and white marble landscape. Entry: free.

Ram Bagh (3.4 km)

Considered the oldest surviving Mughal garden in India, laid out by Emperor Babur in the early 16th century. The garden follows the classic charbagh (four-part garden) layout that is also used in the Taj Mahal’s own gardens. Entry: ₹25 (Indian). Less visited; good for a quiet 30-minute walk.

Sadar Bazaar (2 km)

Agra’s main tourist market – marble items, Agra leather (shoes, bags), textiles and street food. The market is 2 km from the Taj’s South Gate and best explored in the evening when the shops are fully active. The street food stretch near Sadar Bazaar includes Agra’s famous Petha (sweet ash gourd candy) and Jalebi. No entry fee.

Wider Agra Region (7-40 km)

Akbar’s Tomb, Sikandra (10.4 km)

The mausoleum of Emperor Akbar, completed in 1613. A massive walled complex with a multi-storey sandstone and marble tomb at its centre, surrounded by formal gardens. The architecture blends Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Islamic motifs – reflecting Akbar’s syncretic philosophy (Din-i-Ilahi). Entry: ₹25 (Indian), ₹310 (foreign). Allow 1.5 hours.

Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Tomb (10.8 km)

The tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani (also known as Jodha Bai, though this identification is historically contested), one of Akbar’s wives and Jahangir’s mother. Located near Sikandra, adjacent to Akbar’s Tomb complex. The red sandstone structure has fine carving detail. Entry: minimal.

Gurudwara Guru ka Tal (12 km)

A significant Sikh pilgrimage site in Agra, associated with Guru Tegh Bahadur. A large, peaceful gurudwara complex with a sacred tank. Free entry; langar (community meal) available. An important inter-faith heritage stop for visitors interested in Agra’s full religious landscape.

Fatehpur Sikri (38 km)

The most significant day-trip destination from Agra – a complete imperial city built by Emperor Akbar between 1571 and 1585 and then abandoned (historically attributed to water shortage). The 38 km drive takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

The complex includes the Buland Darwaza (one of the tallest gateways in the world at 54 metres), the Jama Masjid, Salim Chishti’s tomb, the Panch Mahal (a five-storey pavilion) and the Diwan-i-Khas (private audience hall). Entry: ₹50 (Indian), ₹600 (foreign). Allow 2-3 hours.

Planning note: Fatehpur Sikri is best visited as a half-day addition to a 2-day Agra itinerary rather than squeezed into a single Agra day that already includes the Taj, Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah. View Our Same Day Agra Tour Special Package

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Places Near Taj Mahal

After coordinating thousands of Agra visits since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows that most Agra guides will not say:

Most major ASI monuments in Agra are closed on Friday – and almost no standard travel guide makes this prominent enough. If your only Agra day is a Friday, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah and Akbar’s Tomb are all closed. The only significant Friday-open options are Mehtab Bagh, Fatehpur Sikri and the bazaars. Plan with this in mind, not as an afterthought.

Mehtab Bagh’s sunset view of the Taj is genuinely better than the inside-the-complex view for photography – from directly across the Yamuna, you see the entire monument including its reflecting pool base, framed by the river and the garden. This view is what appears in most professional Taj Mahal photographs. Most visitors never cross the river to get it.

Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) is architecturally more innovative than it gets credit for. The inlaid marble pietra dura technique used throughout its walls was the direct precursor to the same technique used in the Taj Mahal’s decoration – making it the prototype for the most celebrated building in the world. Most visitors who rush through it in 20 minutes miss this entirely.

Fatehpur Sikri genuinely requires a separate half-day – the 38 km drive plus 2-3 hours inside the complex means combining it with a full Taj + Agra Fort day leaves both experiences rushed. If Fatehpur Sikri is on your list, build a 2-day Agra plan.

Know Before You Visit – Places Near Taj Mahal

  • Friday closure: Most ASI monuments (Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah, Akbar’s Tomb) are closed Friday – plan your visit accordingly
  • Sunrise entry gives the best Taj experience – the first 2 hours are significantly less crowded than the midday peak
  • Mehtab Bagh entry is on the far side of the Yamuna – do not confuse the garden with the riverbank access points closer to the Taj
  • The Taj Mahal does not allow photography inside the main mausoleum (the central room with the cenotaphs) – all other areas permit photography
  • Agra Fort requires 2 hours minimum – rushed 45-minute visits miss most of the complex
  • Fatehpur Sikri needs a dedicated half-day – combine it with Akbar’s Tomb for a logical same-direction route
  • The drive from Agra to Mathura is 65 km – a simple extension to add Braj to an Agra trip
  • Experience My India arranges Agra day tours and multi-city Agra + Mathura circuits. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What are the top 5 tourist places near Taj Mahal?

The top 5 places to visit near the Taj Mahal are: Mehtab Bagh (sunset view across the Yamuna, 1 km), Agra Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2.1 km), Itmad-ud-Daulah – the Baby Taj (marble inlay prototype, 2.3 km), Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra (grand Mughal mausoleum, 10.4 km) and Fatehpur Sikri (Akbar’s deserted imperial city, 38 km). Experience My India sequences all five into Agra day and multi-day packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What is Mehtab Bagh and why should I visit?

Mehtab Bagh is a formal Mughal garden approximately 1 km from the Taj Mahal, situated directly across the Yamuna River. It offers the most complete frontal view of the Taj – including the river and the dome together in the frame – which is why most professional photographs of the Taj are taken from here rather than from inside the complex. Best at sunset (approximately 5:30-7:00 PM depending on season). Entry: ₹300 Indian. Experience My India includes Mehtab Bagh in every Agra itinerary. Call +91-7302265809.

Is Agra Fort worth visiting after the Taj Mahal?

Yes – Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right and is genuinely worth 2-3 hours. It contains Akbar’s red sandstone construction, Jahangir’s palaces, Shah Jahan’s white marble halls and the specific tower from which Shah Jahan could see the Taj Mahal while imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in his final years. Entry: ₹40 Indian, ₹600 foreign. Closed Friday. Experience My India includes Agra Fort in all Agra visit packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

How far is Mathura from the Taj Mahal?

Mathura is approximately 65 km from the Taj Mahal in Agra, a 1 to 1.5 hour drive via NH-44 and NH-2. Vrindavan is approximately 75 km, adding 15-20 minutes. This makes Mathura and Vrindavan a natural extension of any Agra visit – the same trip can cover the Taj Mahal and Agra’s Mughal heritage on Day 1, then move to the Braj pilgrimage circuit (Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan) on Day 2 onwards. Experience My India arranges this circuit from ₹3,999 per person. Call +91-7302265809.

Can I visit Fatehpur Sikri in one day from Agra?

Yes – Fatehpur Sikri is 38 km from Agra (45-60 min drive) and can be visited in a half-day. However, combining Fatehpur Sikri with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in a single day makes all three feel rushed. Experience My India recommends: Day 1 for Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh, Agra Fort. Day 2 for Itmad-ud-Daulah, Akbar’s Tomb and Fatehpur Sikri. A 2-day Agra plan gives each site the time it deserves. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for planning help.
