The Pastime (Leela)
Radha and Krishna were sitting together in intimate proximity – a moment of complete togetherness. A honeybee (madhu-makkhi) began hovering around Radha’s face and one of Krishna’s companions, the playful Madhumangala, chased it away. Making light of the situation, Madhumangala announced with characteristic humour: “Madhu has gone and will never return!”
The Moment of Separation Within Union
The word Madhu struck Radha with sudden force – because “Madhu” is also one of Krishna’s names (Madhusudana, the slayer of the demon Madhu). Hearing it spoken in the context of departure, Radha was overcome by what is called Prema-Vaichittya – a highly refined devotional emotion in which the intensity of love creates the felt experience of separation even while the beloved is physically present.
Forgetting entirely that she was sitting on Krishna’s lap, Radha began weeping and calling out for Him, experiencing His absence in the midst of His presence. The depth of this emotion – the paradox of union experienced as loss – is considered one of the highest expressions of Radha’s love in the Gaudiya and Braj devotional traditions.
