Highlights
ToggleWhy the Vrindavan Parikrama Is More Than a Walk
The Vrindavan Parikrama is the most complete devotional act available to a pilgrim in all of Braj – not because it covers more ground than other pilgrimage routes, but because it encircles the entire sacred territory of Vrindavan in a single continuous act of devotion. Every step of the 10-13 km circuit keeps Vrindavan to your right – the direction of devotion – and every site along the route has a direct connection to a specific event in Lord Krishna’s childhood.
The Parikrama is not a tourist walk. It is an act of remembrance – each ghat, each temple, each grove along the path marks a moment from the Srimad Bhagavatam and Braj Mandal tradition. Walking it barefoot, chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, in the company of other pilgrims – particularly on an Ekadashi morning – produces an atmosphere that no temple queue or darshan session reproduces.
I am Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and guiding pilgrims since 2018. I have walked the Vrindavan Parikrama hundreds of times across every season – in December fog, in March Holi crowds and on Kartik Ekadashi when tens of thousands of pilgrims fill the entire 10 km route simultaneously. In this guide you will find the complete route sequence with all temple stops, exact distances, season-by-season timing guidance, the spiritual protocol for performing the Parikrama, the difference between Vrindavan and Govardhan Parikrama and the ground-level realities that first-time Parikrama pilgrims need. What Is the Vrindavan Parikrama?
The Vrindavan Parikrama (also called Vrindavan Parikrama Marg or Braj Parikrama within Vrindavan town) is the ritual circumambulation of the entire town of Vrindavan – walking in a clockwise direction around its outer boundary, keeping all sacred sites to your right.
| Detail | Information |
| Total distance | 10-13 km (depending on exact route and temple detours) |
| Direction | Clockwise – sacred sites kept to the right throughout |
| Traditional start/end point | Keshi Ghat (Yamuna river bank) |
| Duration on foot | 3-5 hours at devotional pace |
| Duration by e-rickshaw/auto | 1-2 hours |
| Entry fee | Free – no ticket, no registration |
| Best day | Ekadashi (11th lunar day – twice monthly) |
| Best season | October – March |
| Scriptural basis | Described in Braj devotional literature as equivalent in merit to visiting all sacred sites in Vrindavan simultaneously |
| Footwear | Traditionally barefoot – socks acceptable in hot months |
| Direction of mantra | Hare Krishna Maha Mantra chanted throughout |
The Vrindavan Parikrama is distinct from the Braj 84-kos Parikrama (the full sacred territory of Braj, approximately 336 km) and from the Govardhan Parikrama (21 km around Govardhan Hill, 22 km from Vrindavan). The Vrindavan Parikrama specifically encircles the town of Vrindavan.
Experience My India includes the Vrindavan Parikrama in all 2-day and longer Vrindavan tour packages.

Vrindavan Parikrama Distance and Walking Time
| Route Type | Distance | Walking Time | Notes |
| Standard Parikrama (main road route) | ~10 km | 3-3.5 hours | Follows outer perimeter; fewer temple detours |
| Full Parikrama with all temple stops | ~12-13 km | 4-5 hours | Includes all significant stops along both Yamuna bank and inner route |
| E-rickshaw / auto circuit | 10-13 km | 1-2 hours | Vehicle covers main route; short walks at each stop |
| Bicycle Parikrama | 10-13 km | 1.5-2 hours | Suitable for experienced cyclists; some lanes narrow |
Walking Speed Reference
| Pilgrim Type | Pace | Expected Total Time (Full Route) |
| Fit adult, devotional pace | 3-4 km/hour | 3-3.5 hours (without temple stops) |
| Standard pilgrim with darshan at each stop | 2-2.5 km/hour | 5-6 hours (with temple darshan) |
| Senior citizen / family with children | 1.5-2 km/hour | 6-8 hours (with stops) |
| E-rickshaw (for seniors / mobility-limited) | – | 1-2 hours (vehicle) + 30 mins walking at stops |
Practical planning tip from Gurudutt: Most guides and travel sites say “3-5 hours” for the Vrindavan Parikrama. That is accurate if you walk the circuit with minimal stops. If you stop for full darshan at Radha Raman Shringar Darshan (8:00-9:00 AM), Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir fountain show – which you should – plan 6-8 hours. Experience My India builds this realistic duration into every Vrindavan itinerary. Call +91-7302265809.

Vrindavan Parikrama on Ekadashi – When the Circuit Comes Alive
Ekadashi is the 11th day of each lunar fortnight – occurring twice every month in the Hindu calendar. On Ekadashi in Vrindavan, the Parikrama route transforms entirely.
| Ekadashi Detail | Information |
| Frequency | Twice per month – 11th day of each lunar fortnight (Shukla and Krishna Paksha) |
| Pilgrims on Vrindavan Parikrama | 10,000-50,000+ depending on the Ekadashi |
| Most significant Ekadashis | Ekadashi during Kartik month (October-November 2026) – highest annual attendance |
| Best start time on Ekadashi | 4:30-5:00 AM – pilgrims begin well before sunrise |
| Atmosphere | Tens of thousands chanting Hare Krishna Maha Mantra continuously along the full 10 km circuit – collective devotional energy is unlike any other day in Vrindavan |
| Duration on Ekadashi | 4-7 hours – more stops, more time at each site, collective pace |
| Cost | Free |
What makes Ekadashi Parikrama different: On a regular weekday the Parikrama route has a few hundred pilgrims. On Ekadashi, the route is a continuous moving stream of devotees – orange-robed sadhus, families carrying lamps, elderly pilgrims on dandavat (prostration) Parikrama, ISKCON devotees in kirtan processions. The collective chanting of the Maha Mantra creates a sound environment that fills the entire 10 km path from 4:30 AM until well past sunrise.
Experience My India specifically plans Ekadashi visits for groups focused on the devotional Parikrama experience. Ekadashi dates fall on a predictable lunar calendar – WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for the 2026 Ekadashi calendar.

Spiritual Guide – How to Perform the Vrindavan Parikrama
Direction and Tradition
The Parikrama is always performed clockwise – keeping all sacred sites, temples and the town of Vrindavan to your right at all times. In Hindu and Vaishnava tradition, clockwise circumambulation is the act of keeping divinity on the right side – the honoured side. Counterclockwise walking is never appropriate for a devotional Parikrama.
Traditional Attire and Conduct
| Practice | Detail |
| Direction | Clockwise – Vrindavan always to your right |
| Dress | Shoulders and knees covered; modest traditional attire preferred |
| Footwear | Barefoot is traditional and considered highly meritorious; carry socks for hot surfaces in summer |
| Fasting | Many pilgrims observe grain-free fasting (avoiding rice and wheat) during the Parikrama day |
| Eating after Parikrama | Traditional practice: eat a full vegetarian prasadam meal only after completing the full circuit |
| Mantra | Hare Krishna Maha Mantra chanted continuously or silently throughout |
| Hydration | Fresh lime soda, coconut water or buttermilk from route vendors; avoid cold drinks |
| Attitude | Maintain silence or low speech near monastic areas; reverence at cremation sites |
The Dandavat Parikrama
A small number of devotees perform the Dandavat Parikrama – prostrating fully on the ground at every step for the entire 10-13 km circuit. This is considered the most intensive form of the Parikrama and typically takes 3-7 days to complete. It is observed by advanced devotees and sadhus.
Starting and Ending the Parikrama
The traditional starting point is Keshi Ghat – where pilgrims take a ritual dip in or touch the Yamuna water before beginning the circuit. The Parikrama is complete when you return to the same starting point and again touch or view the Yamuna.
Experience My India includes a full spiritual briefing before every guided Parikrama – the theological significance of each stop, the correct approach to each temple and the ritual practices at each ghat. Call +91-7302265809.

What Nobody Tells You About the Vrindavan Parikrama
After walking the Vrindavan Parikrama hundreds of times since 2018 and guiding more than 50,000 pilgrims through the circuit, here is what I – Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India – share privately before every first Parikrama:
The Vrindavan Parikrama has no English signage anywhere on the route. There are no route markers, no direction boards in English, no tourist-facing maps at the starting point or along the circuit. First-time visitors attempting the Parikrama independently frequently take wrong turns in Vrindavan’s dense lane network and end up 2-3 km off the correct path. Our guides have walked this route hundreds of times and know every gully, every shortcut and every site that general guides omit.
The “3-5 hours” time estimate assumes you are not stopping for darshan. Adding Radha Raman Shringar Darshan (45 minutes), Banke Bihari darshan (45 minutes), ISKCON mid-morning (30 minutes) and Prem Mandir fountain show (20 minutes) adds 2-3 hours to the circuit. A meaningful Parikrama with proper darshan at each stop takes 6-8 hours. Plan accordingly.
The Yamuna bank sections near Kaliya Deh and Gopishwar Mahadev become slippery and difficult during and after monsoon rains. From July through mid-September, these sections require careful footing – closed sandals are more appropriate than barefoot walking on these specific sections in this season. Experience My India advises pilgrim groups on seasonal footwear for each section.
Banke Bihari Temple has a 5.5-hour afternoon closure in summer – and the Parikrama passes directly through the Banke Bihari lane. If your Parikrama passes Banke Bihari between 12:00 PM and 5:30 PM in summer, you will find closed gates. Plan your route timing so you reach the Banke Bihari section either before 11:30 AM or after 5:30 PM (summer) or 4:30 PM (winter).
The Prem Mandir fountain show (7:00 PM) is the natural Parikrama finale – but only if you time the circuit to end there at that hour. If you start your Parikrama at 6:30 AM from Keshi Ghat and walk at a devotional pace with all temple stops, you should arrive at Prem Mandir at approximately 6:00-6:30 PM – perfectly positioned for the 7:00 PM fountain show. Experience My India builds this sequence into every guided Parikrama itinerary.
Experience My India plans all Vrindavan Parikrama visits around these realities. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

The Vrindavan Parikrama takes 3 to 5 hours for the walking-only circuit (10-13 km at 2-4 km/hour devotional pace). Adding full darshan at major stops – Radha Raman Shringar Darshan, Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir – extends the total to 6 to 8 hours. By e-rickshaw or auto, the route takes 1-2 hours. On Ekadashi with collective chanting, allow 5-7 hours for the full circuit. Experience My India builds realistic Parikrama timing into every tour – call +91-7302265809.
The Vrindavan Parikrama distance is approximately 10-13 km depending on the exact route taken and the number of temple detours. The outer perimeter circuit (following the main Parikrama Marg) is approximately 10 km. Including all major temple stops and the Yamuna bank sections adds 2-3 km, bringing the full Parikrama to 12-13 km. This is distinct from the Govardhan Parikrama (21 km around Govardhan Hill, 22 km from Vrindavan) and the Braj 84-kos Parikrama (336 km). Experience My India guides the complete circuit – call +91-7302265809.
The Govardhan Parikrama (21 km around Govardhan Hill, located 22 km from Vrindavan) takes 5-7 hours on foot at a devotional pace with stops at all major sites – Mukharvind Temple, Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar, Dan Ghati and Manasi Ganga. By e-rickshaw (₹200-₹400 full circuit), the same route takes 4-5 hours including stops. This is separate from the Vrindavan Parikrama (10-13 km, 3-5 hours). Experience My India plans both Parikramas in a 3-day Braj circuit from ₹4,999 per person – call +91-7302265809.
October to March is the best season for the Vrindavan Parikrama – temperatures of 8°C to 28°C, comfortable for a 3-8 hour walk. Start at 6:00-7:00 AM in this season. In summer (April-June), start by 5:00-5:30 AM and complete before 9:30 AM to avoid hot stone surfaces. The most spiritually intense Parikrama is on Ekadashi days (twice monthly) when tens of thousands of pilgrims chant the Maha Mantra together along the route. Experience My India confirms Ekadashi dates and plans accordingly – call +91-7302265809.
The Vrindavan Parikrama traditionally starts and ends at Keshi Ghat – the principal Yamuna bathing ghat in Vrindavan, where pilgrims touch or bathe in the Yamuna before beginning the clockwise circuit. Many first-time visitors start at ISKCON Temple (which has the widest accessible paths and multilingual information) as an alternative start point. The Parikrama can technically begin at any point on the circuit, as it is a complete loop. Experience My India guides start the Parikrama at Keshi Ghat for all traditional pilgrim groups – call +91-7302265809.
Yes – the full Vrindavan Parikrama route is accessible by e-rickshaw or auto-rickshaw for senior citizens and mobility-limited pilgrims. The full circuit by vehicle takes 1-2 hours, with short walks at each major temple or ghat stop. E-rickshaw hire for the full Parikrama circuit: approximately ₹150-₹250 per vehicle (negotiate before boarding on weekdays). Experience My India arranges e-rickshaw Parikrama circuits at confirmed rates for all group types – call +91-7302265809.
The Vrindavan Parikrama (10-13 km) encircles the town of Vrindavan specifically – taking 3-8 hours by foot. The Braj 84-kos Parikrama (approximately 336 km) encircles the entire sacred Braj Mandal territory covering all 12 sacred Braj forests and associated sites – taking 28-30 days on foot by traditional standards. The Govardhan Parikrama (21 km) encircles Govardhan Hill (25 km from Vrindavan) and is a third distinct circuit. Experience My India plans all three circuits – call +91-7302265809 for a combined Braj itinerary.
Wear modest traditional clothing that covers shoulders and knees – kurta pyjama or salwar kameez are ideal. Footwear: traditionally barefoot, which is considered most meritorious. Carry socks for hot stone surfaces if visiting between April and June. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops and tight-fitting Western clothing – temple staff at several Parikrama route temples enforce dress codes. Experience My India sends dress code reminders to every pilgrim 24 hours before the Parikrama day – call +91-7302265809.
The primary mantra chanted during the Vrindavan Parikrama is the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. This 16-word mantra is chanted continuously or silently throughout the circuit. On Ekadashi days, the collective chanting of this mantra by thousands of pilgrims simultaneously along the full 10 km route is one of the most distinctively Vrindavan experiences available. Experience My India includes mantra instruction in guided Parikrama tours – call +91-7302265809.
Yes – the Vrindavan Parikrama route itself is completely free. There is no entry fee for the circuit, no registration and no organisation required. All temples along the route also have free entry. The only costs are: e-rickshaw hire if using a vehicle (₹150-₹250 for the full circuit), prasad offerings at temples (₹20-₹100 optional) and food or refreshments from vendors along the route. Experience My India includes the guided Parikrama in all Vrindavan tour packages from ₹1,999 per person – call +91-7302265809.
