It is not primarily a temple in the darshan-line sense. The Peeth takes its name and spiritual lineage from Sant Malook Das Ji (1574-1682) – one of the most significant poet-saints of the Bhakti movement, whose philosophy of absolute faith in God’s providence gave India one of its most quoted couplets. History – Sant Malook Das Ji and the Founding

Sant Malook Das Ji (1574-1682)

Sant Malook Das Ji was born in 1574 in Kada, Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. He lived for 108 years – an extraordinary lifespan that saw him become one of the most celebrated poet-saints of the Bhakti movement in North India.

He is most remembered for a couplet that became one of the most widely quoted expressions of spiritual surrender in Hindi literature:

“Ajgar kare na chakri, pancchi kare na kaam, Das Maluka kahi gaye, sabke data Ram.”

(The python does no work, the bird takes no employment – Maluka Das says, Ram provides for all.)

This philosophy of absolute trust in God’s providence – that sincere devotion and surrender to Ram is sufficient for all of life’s needs – defined Sant Malook Das Ji’s teaching and remains the spiritual backbone of the Peeth he established.

The Founding of the Peeth

Shri Malook Peeth was established in Vrindavan as a centre of the Ramanand Sampraday – the devotional tradition founded by Sant Ramananda that emphasises the worship of Lord Rama and the path of bhakti (devotion) open to all regardless of caste or background.

In its early years, the Peeth housed approximately 2,500 saints who dedicated their lives to three activities: deity worship (Thakur Seva), serving incoming sadhus (Sadhu Seva) and learning and composing traditional bhajans. This triple commitment – to the deity, to the visiting saint community and to devotional musical tradition – has continued unbroken from the founding to the present.

The full name of the institution – Sri Malook Das Ji Akhara – reflects its historical status as an Akhara within the Ramanand Sampraday, a structured monastic order with its own governance, traditions and lineage of leadership.

The Peeth is currently headed by Jagadguru Dwaracharya Swami Shri Rajendra Das Ji Maharaj – one of the most respected Vaishnav scholars in contemporary India.

Sadhu and Devotee Seva

The Peeth continues its founding tradition of caring for resident saints and visiting pilgrims. This includes daily residential needs and medical care for the Brahmachari and Sanyasi saints in residence and free prasad (blessed food) served daily to all visiting pilgrims. No distinction is made based on caste, origin or status – the prasad seva is open to all.

Jadkhor Gaushala (Cow Shelter)

Approximately 1 km from the main temple complex, the Peeth operates a large cow shelter – the Jadkhor Gaushala. Pure milk, ghee, buttermilk and yogurt produced here are used exclusively for deity worship and for the distribution of holy prasad. The cow shelter is both a welfare initiative and an integral part of the temple’s ritual practice.

Gurukul and Classical Music School

The Peeth runs a structured Gurukul education programme alongside a dedicated institution for learning classical Indian instruments – primarily harmonium and tabla. Students receive instruction in the devotional musical tradition (bhajan singing and accompaniment) that has been central to the Peeth’s identity since its founding as a centre of bhajan composition.

Shri Bhagwan Naam Bank

One of the Peeth’s most distinctive features is the Naam Bank – a spiritual repository where devotees physically write the divine names of God (principally Ram Nam) millions of times and submit these written records for collective spiritual merit. This practice, rooted in the nam-jap (divine name repetition) tradition, is specific to this institution and is not replicated at most other Vrindavan ashrams.

How to Reach Shri Malook Peeth Vrindavan

Shri Malook Peeth is located in the older, inner lanes of Vrindavan – in the Goda Vihar area of Bansiwat Mohalla. The lanes here are narrow and not navigable by regular vehicles for the final 200-400 metres.

Most Vrindavan itineraries skip Malook Peeth entirely. The major tour operators and online itinerary guides focus on Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir – all of which are important but are heavy on tourist crowds. Shri Malook Peeth draws primarily genuine devotees and scholars rather than camera-carrying tourists. The atmosphere is significantly different – quieter, more contemplative and more representative of how Vrindavan functions as a living monastic city rather than a pilgrimage attraction.

The Naam Bank is one of the most unusual devotional institutions in Vrindavan. The practice of writing Ram Nam millions of times and depositing it in a physical repository is not common even in North India. First-time visitors who spend time at the Naam Bank – watching devotees write and submit – find it among the most memorable and humanly moving experiences of their Vrindavan visit.

Swami Rajendra Das Ji Maharaj’s discourse schedule is not always publicly listed in advance. If attending a Bhagavatam discourse is your primary reason to visit, ask Experience My India to confirm whether a discourse is scheduled during your visit dates. Walking in to a live Bhagavatam discourse at Malook Peeth – particularly one on the Bhaktamal which covers Sant Malook Das Ji’s own story – is a different experience from visiting an empty hall.

The Jadkhor Gaushala (1 km from the main Peeth) is worth a separate visit. Most pilgrims who visit the main Peeth complex do not know about the Gaushala branch. It is the operational centre of the Peeth’s cow welfare programme and gives a complete picture of how the ashram’s daily sadhana functions.
