ToggleSomnath and Dwarka – Why Visit Together
The Somnath-Dwarka circuit is one of India’s most significant pilgrimage routes – combining two of Hinduism’s most sacred sites in a single coastal journey through the Saurashtra region of Gujarat.
Dwarka is the ancient capital of Lord Krishna – the city where he ruled as king after leaving Mathura and Vrindavan. It is one of India’s four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, drawing millions of devotees annually to the Dwarkadhish Temple and the surrounding sacred geography. Somnath is the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas – the supreme sacred forms of Lord Shiva – a temple that has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times across its history and stands today as one of Hinduism’s most enduring sacred symbols.
The two towns sit approximately 233 km apart on the Gujarat coast, connected by a coastal highway that passes through Porbandar (birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi). A Somnath Dwarka Tour Package from Experience My India covers both cities in 3 to 5 days with private transport, named hotels and darshan coordination – from ₹8,999 per person. Call +91-7302265809.

Places to Visit in Dwarka
1. Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir) – The Sacred Heart of Dwarka
The Dwarkadhish Temple – also known as Jagat Mandir (Temple of the Universe) – is the centrepiece of the Dwarka pilgrimage. This iconic 2,500-year-old shrine is built in the Maru-Gurjara architectural style, featuring a 72-metre spire with a massive 52-yard flag flying above it.
Devotees enter through the Swarga Dwar (Gate to Heaven) on the north side and exit through the Moksha Dwar (Gate to Liberation) on the south side – a specific and meaningful directional passage that no other Char Dham replicates in quite the same way.

| Timings | 7:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM daily |
| Entry | Free |

2. Shree Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple – The Jyotirlinga Near Dwarka
Located approximately 16 km from Dwarka town on the route toward Okha and Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. The complex is immediately recognisable by the towering 25-metre-tall seated Lord Shiva statue at the entrance.

The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga visit is naturally combined with the Bet Dwarka ferry – both are on the Okha road and covered efficiently in a single Dwarka circuit day. See the complete Nageshwar Jyotirlinga guide for darshan tips and the underground sanctum details.
3. Gomti Ghat and Sudama Setu – The Sacred River Meets the Sea
Gomti Ghat sits immediately behind the Dwarkadhish Temple – the sacred confluence where the Gomti River meets the Arabian Sea. Pilgrims take a holy dip at the ghat before entering the temple for darshan. The ghat has 56 steps leading down to the water and the evening aarti here is a peaceful companion to the Dwarkadhish evening session.
The newly built Sudama Setu suspension bridge connects Gomti Ghat to the Panchkui Tirth on the opposite bank of the Gomti. The bridge offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the temple spire simultaneously – one of Dwarka’s most photographed spots.
4. Rukmini Devi Mandir – The 12th-Century Temple of Krishna’s Queen
Rukmini Devi Mandir is dedicated to Rukmini – the chief queen of Lord Krishna – and sits approximately 2 km from the central Dwarkadhish Temple. Built in the 12th century, it features intricate medieval carvings of exceptional quality.
The temple’s physical separation from the Dwarkadhish Temple carries a specific mythological explanation: the sage Durvasa’s curse. According to local tradition, Durvasa was on his way to visit Krishna and Rukmini when Rukmini requested a sip of water. When she drank before the sage arrived, Durvasa cursed that she would forever be separated from Krishna. The separate temple is understood as the physical manifestation of this curse. For the complete Rukmini Devi Mandir guide with timings and the full legend, see the dedicated page.

It is approximately 30 km from Dwarka city near Okha and is now accessible both by road across the Sudarshan Setu bridge (opened 2024, 2.32 km) and by the traditional ferry from Okha Port.

For a break from the temple circuit, Shivrajpur Beach – approximately 12 km from Dwarka – is Gujarat’s first Blue Flag certified beach. Known for its exceptionally clear turquoise water, white sand and water sports (scuba diving, snorkelling), it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Saurashtra.

7. Shree Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple – The First Jyotirlinga
The Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple is the crown jewel of the entire Somnath-Dwarka circuit – revered as the first of India’s twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the most historically significant temples on the Indian subcontinent. The present temple was rebuilt in the Chalukya architectural style and reconsecrated in 1951 under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The temple complex opens directly toward the ocean – one of the only Jyotirlinga temples positioned to face the Arabian Sea. The Baan Stambh (arrow pillar) in the temple complex famously points southward with the inscription: “There is no land between this point and the South Pole.”
| Detail | Information |
| Significance | First of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India |

9. Bhalka Tirth Temple – Where Krishna’s Earthly Journey Ended
Bhalka Tirth is approximately 5 km from Somnath on the Somnath-Veraval road – the sacred site where Lord Krishna was resting under a peepal tree when a hunter named Jara mistook his foot for a deer and struck it with an arrow, signifying the end of his earthly avatar. This site carries profound significance: it marks the final moment of the Dwapar Yuga itself.
The temple compound is emotively designed with the peepal tree marked at the centre. The site is part of a sacred trail connecting to Dehotsarg Tirth and ultimately Triveni Sangam. For the complete Bhalka Tirth Somnath guide with legend, timings and the full Krishna departure trail, see the dedicated page.
| Detail | Information |

10. Triveni Sangam Ghat – Three Rivers Meet the Sea
Triveni Sangam Somnath is the sacred confluence where three rivers – the Hiran, Kapila and the mythical Saraswati – meet the Arabian Sea, approximately 1.5 km from the Somnath Temple. Pilgrims take a holy dip at the ghat, perform ancestral rituals (pind daan) and take brief boat rides to the confluence point in the sea.

For the complete Triveni Sangam Somnath guide including the Pind Daan ritual details and evening aarti timing, see the dedicated page.
11. Pandav Gufa (Hinglaj Mataji Gufa) – The Underground Cave Temple
Tucked near the Triveni Sangam area, the Pandav Gufa is an authentic underground cave temple complex discovered in 1949. Local tradition holds that the five Pandavas and Draupadi stayed here and worshipped their clan deity, Hinglaj Mata, during their exile from Hastinapur. The narrow underground stone caves offer a completely distinct experience from the open-air temples and ghats.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You
Dwarkadhish Temple closes from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM every day. All Dwarka darshan planning must work around this 4.5-hour midday closure. Most first-time visitors who arrive in Dwarka at noon find the temple closed. Experience My India always begins Dwarka day visits at 7:00 AM sharp for the opening session – and uses the midday closure for Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Gomti Ghat, or Rukmini Devi Mandir.
The Bet Dwarka island is now accessible by road via the Sudarshan Setu bridge (opened 2024) – the old ferry from Okha is optional. Many travel resources still show the ferry as the only option. Since early 2024, you can drive directly onto Bet Dwarka island across the 2.32 km bridge. Experience My India uses the bridge for all group visits – faster and more flexible than the ferry queue.
Phones and electronics are strictly banned at both Dwarkadhish Temple AND Somnath Temple. Both temples have this rule – and both enforce it seriously. Deposit all devices at the cloakroom before joining the security queue, not at the gate. Experience My India always manages the device deposit before groups reach the entry point.
The Jay Somnath Sound and Light Show is not visible from the Somnath beach road – you must be inside the venue. Some visitors try to watch it from the Samudra Darshan Path outside the temple complex. The show requires being inside the designated venue with a ticket (₹50 adults). Buy tickets from the counter at least 30 minutes before the 7:45 PM start. Experience My India pre-coordinates tickets for all Somnath groups.
Triveni Sangam Somnath is a different site from Triveni Sangam Prayagraj. Somnath’s Triveni Sangam – the confluence of Hiran, Kapila and mythical Saraswati rivers with the Arabian Sea – is one of the holiest tirthas in Gujarat. But it is entirely different from the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj (Ganga + Yamuna + Saraswati). Both are significant; they are not the same place. This confusion affects several pilgrims. Experience My India clarifies the distinction before every Somnath visit.
