Putana Uddhar Sthali (also: Putana Vadh Sthali, Putana Moksha Sthali) marks the exact location inside the Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan – the 84-pillared mansion of Nanda Baba) in Mahavan, near Mathura, where the 6-day-old infant Lord Krishna performed his first divine pastime – slaying the demoness Putana and granting her moksha (salvation). Mahavan is located approximately 15 km south-east of Mathura on the opposite bank of the Yamuna. Priests at the site show the cradle room where the event occurred. Entry is free. Experience My India includes this site in the outer Braj circuit. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

ToggleKrishna’s First Leela – The Site Where Divine Mercy Began
Of all the sites in the Braj region, Putana Uddhar Sthali in Mahavan holds a specific and extraordinary distinction: it marks the location of Lord Krishna’s very first divine pastime (leela) on earth.
Krishna was six days old. He had been born in Mathura’s prison, carried across the Yamuna by his father Vasudeva to the safety of Gokul (Mahavan) and placed in the care of Nanda Baba and Yashoda. Six days into this new life, the demoness Putana – sent by the tyrant King Kansa to kill all newborns in the region – arrived at Nanda Baba’s mansion disguised as a beautiful woman offering milk.
What followed was not merely an infant’s survival – it was a revelation of the deepest principle in Vaishnav theology: that Krishna’s mercy exceeds any boundary, including enmity. Putana came to kill. She received moksha.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Location – Mahavan (Old Gokul) & the Chaurasi Khamba
Mahavan – historically called Brihadvan or Brihat Van (“the great forest”) – is the area understood in the Braj pilgrimage tradition as “Old Gokul”: the original site of Nanda Baba’s village where the infant Krishna spent his earliest days.
| Location Detail | Information |
| Village | Mahavan (Brihadvan / Old Gokul) |
| District | Mathura, Uttar Pradesh |

| Distinction from Gokul | Mahavan and the area called Gokul (near Mathura) are related but distinct – Mahavan is considered the older, original Gokul settlement |
What is the Chaurasi Khamba?
The “Chaurasi Khamba” literally means “84 pillars” – referring to the ancient stone-pillared mansion that is the traditional site of Nanda Baba’s home where Krishna spent his early childhood. The 84 pillars themselves are one of the most distinctive architectural features of this ancient structure and priests of the site maintain active worship and daily rituals here.

The Putana Leela – The Complete Story
The Putana episode is recorded in the Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10 and in the Vishnu Purana as the first of Lord Krishna’s divine pastimes on earth.
The Setting
Six days after Krishna’s birth at Mathura’s prison, Vasudeva had carried him across the Yamuna to the safety of Nanda Baba’s home in Gokul (Mahavan). The infant lay in his cradle. His adoptive mother Yashoda and the women of the cowherd community were engaged in celebration rituals.
Kansa’s Command
In Mathura, the tyrant King Kansa had received word from his astrologers that the eighth child of Devaki – his nemesis – had been born. Unable to locate the specific child (Krishna had been secretly replaced with another infant), Kansa sent his most capable demoness: Putana.
| Detail | Information |
| Putana’s nature | A powerful demoness (Rakshasi) of immense power; expert at shape-shifting |
| Her disguise | Transformed herself into a beautiful, benevolent-appearing woman – a nursing mother |
| Her method | Smear deadly Kalakoot poison on her breasts; offer milk to the infant; the child would die |
| The poison | Kalakoot – the same category of cosmic poison that emerged from the Samudra Manthan and was drunk by Lord Shiva |
| Why she chose this method | She appeared as a loving mother offering milk – the most disarming, trust-generating appearance possible |
The Entry to Nand Bhavan
Putana entered Nanda Baba’s mansion in her disguised form. The Bhagavata Purana notes that she was so convincingly beautiful and maternal in appearance that no one among the cowherd community suspected her. She went directly to the cradle where the infant Krishna lay.
Krishna’s Response
The infant Krishna lay in the cradle. Putana lifted him, held him and offered her poison-smeared breast for him to nurse.
| Moment | What Happened |
| Putana lifts Krishna | Krishna – fully omniscient even as an infant – knows exactly who she is and what she intends |
| Krishna’s choice | Krishna accepts the milk – but does not merely consume the milk; he draws out Putana’s very life force along with it |
| The sucking | Krishna drew out the poison along with Putana’s prana (vital life energy) – she could not release him |
| Putana’s death | Putana’s life force was completely withdrawn; she fell dead, her disguise dropping to reveal her true enormous demoness form |
| The result | Putana was slain – the first “enemy” Krishna dispatched in this incarnation; the first leela of the Dvapara Yuga |
The Size of the Body
The Bhagavata Purana describes that when Putana fell dead and her disguise dropped, her body extended across a vast area – such was her true size as a powerful demoness. The residents of Gokul came out to find an enormous fallen body, with the infant Krishna playing unharmed on her chest.
Experience My India explains this narrative in full at the Chaurasi Khamba. The top 25 places to visit in Mathura Vrindavan covers the complete Braj circuit context. The 8 Days Braj 84 Kosh Yatra includes Mahavan in the complete Braj pilgrimage. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Why Krishna Granted Putana Moksha
This is the most philosophically significant aspect of the Putana leela – and the reason the site is called “Putana Uddhar Sthali” (the site of Putana’s liberation) or “Putana Moksha Sthali,” not just “Putana Vadh Sthali” (site of Putana’s killing).
The Theology of Putana’s Salvation
| Question | Answer |
| Did Putana come to give love or kill? | She came to kill. She smeared poison on her breast. Her intent was entirely malicious. |
| What did Krishna receive? | The milk – even poison-laced – and the life force of a being who had taken the form of a nursing mother and offered milk |
| Why did Krishna grant moksha? | Because she had performed the external act of a mother giving milk to a child. The form of the act – a mother nurturing – carried a spiritual residue that Krishna recognised and honoured, regardless of intent. |
| The principle | Krishna’s mercy does not require perfect devotion. Even an external, accidental or coerced act of service toward Krishna carries spiritual fruit. |
| What Putana received | Moksha – liberation; elevation to Goloka (the eternal spiritual abode) as a spiritual foster mother |
The Bhagavata Purana’s Own Statement
The Bhagavata Purana explicitly states that Putana received the status of Krishna’s nurse in the spiritual world – that in Goloka Vrindavan, she resides as one of Krishna’s maternal figures. The Purana emphasises this as a teaching: if even one who came as an enemy with poison, but performed the form of nursing, received such elevation – what then is the result for those who serve Krishna with genuine love?
This makes Putana Uddhar Sthali not merely a site where a demon was defeated – it is a site that teaches the unbounded scope of Krishna’s grace. Experience My India explains this theological dimension to every group at the site. The 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour from Ahmedabad and from Bangalore include the outer Braj circuit. Call +91-7302265809.
Putana’s Previous Life – The Ratnamala Connection
The Braj tradition preserves a specific account of Putana’s identity in a previous life that makes her story even more theologically layered:
| Life | Name | Event |
| Previous life | Ratnamala | Daughter of King Bali (the great Asura king who donated the universe to Vamana) |
| The moment | When Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana (the dwarf avatar) before King Bali, Ratnamala saw the beautiful child and felt a maternal impulse – she wished she could nurse this divine infant | |
| The desire | A pure maternal wish to offer milk to the divine child | |
| The fulfillment | In the next birth, as Putana in the Dvapara Yuga, she was given the opportunity to approach and nurse Krishna – but due to the residue of her demonic nature, she came with poison | |
| The result | Krishna still recognised the original maternal impulse from Ratnamala’s wish – and granted moksha on that basis |
This karmic cycle is one of the most striking examples in the Puranas of divine memory. Krishna remembered Ratnamala’s wish across incarnations and yugas. The demoness Putana was, at her deepest level, a being who had once genuinely wished to nurture the Supreme – and Krishna fulfilled that wish, even though her current-life execution of it was poisoned.
For pilgrims who want the complete Braj theological narrative, the top 10 places to visit in Mathura covers the broader Mathura context. The Theological Significance – What Putana’s Story Teaches
The Putana leela is not merely a story of a demon being defeated. It is one of the most important theological statements in the Bhagavata Purana on the subject of Krishna’s grace.
| Teaching | Explanation |
| Grace beyond intent | Krishna’s grace is not conditional on the receiver’s motivation. Even malicious intent did not prevent Putana from receiving moksha because the external form of her action (nursing a child) was recognised. |
| The power of any connection with Krishna | The Bhagavata Purana uses Putana to illustrate that any connection with Krishna – even hostile – produces spiritual fruit. If enemies receive liberation, devotees receive infinitely more. |
| The mother-child relationship | By accepting Putana’s milk – even poisoned – and then granting her the status of a maternal figure in his eternal abode, Krishna elevated the form of the mother-child relationship to a cosmic spiritual category. |
| The first leela sets the tone | The very first of Krishna’s earthly pastimes is an act of mercy toward an enemy. This establishes the keynote of his entire Braj childhood – in which even demons who came to kill were given liberation. |
| For devotees | If Putana – who came with poison – received this elevation, the Bhagavata Purana asks: what is the result for those who come with love, devotion and genuine offering? The implication is immeasurable grace. |

Chaurasi Khamba – The 84-Pillared Nand Bhavan
The Putana Uddhar Sthali is located inside the Chaurasi Khamba – the 84-pillared ancient structure traditionally identified as Nanda Baba’s mansion (Nand Bhavan) in Mahavan.
| Detail | Information |
| Name | Chaurasi Khamba (Chaurasi = 84; Khamba = pillars) |
| Also known as | Nand Bhavan, Nand Rai Bhavan |
| What it is | An ancient stone-pillared structure; the traditional site of Nanda Baba’s home |
| Number of pillars | 84 – a number sacred in the Braj tradition (84 kosh parikrama, 84 sacred forests, 84 ghats) |
| Architecture | Ancient; the pillars themselves are of considerable age; the structure has been maintained and restored over centuries |
| What it contains | The Putana Uddhar Sthali / cradle room; deities of Nanda Baba and Yashoda; Krishna’s childhood-related sacred objects and paintings |
| Active worship | Yes – priests perform daily rituals; the site is an active pilgrimage |
| Entry | Free |
The significance of 84 pillars: In the Braj pilgrimage tradition, the number 84 appears repeatedly – the 84 kosh parikrama (the outer pilgrimage circuit), the 84 Vaishnav temples, the 84 sacred forests of Braj. The 84 pillars of Nand Bhavan are understood as a manifestation of this cosmic number within the very structure of Krishna’s childhood home. Experience My India explains the significance of the 84 at this site. The Delhi to Govardhan distance guide covers the Govardhan outer circuit that includes the 84 kosh context. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
The Cradle Room – Where the Leela Occurred
Within the Chaurasi Khamba complex, the priests specifically show visitors the cradle room – the room where the infant Krishna lay when Putana entered.
| Detail | Information |
| What it is | The specific room inside Chaurasi Khamba identified by tradition as the room where Putana found the infant Krishna |
| What the priests show | The site of the cradle / the spot where the event occurred |
| Character | Small, intimate room; active worship ongoing |
| Devotional significance | Standing in the exact room where the 6-day-old Krishna performed his first leela; the specific square feet of sacred geography |
| What pilgrims do | Darshan; prostration; silent prayer; receiving the priests’ narration of the event |
This is not a generalised “Krishna was here” claim – the priests of the Chaurasi Khamba are hereditary custodians of the site who maintain a specific oral tradition about the location of the cradle room and the Putana event. Experience My India always requests the priests’ narration for every group visiting this room. The 3 Days Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour includes the Mahavan outer circuit on Day 2. Call +91-7302265809.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About This Site
After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through the Braj outer circuit since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows:
Putana Uddhar Sthali is one of the most theologically rich sites in all of Braj – and one of the most unknown to mainstream tourism. Virtually every travel guide that covers Mathura-Vrindavan focuses on the standard circuit (Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat, Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir). The Gokul-Mahavan outer circuit – including Putana Uddhar Sthali – is visited almost exclusively by serious pilgrims, not tourists. The result is that this site, located at the literal beginning of Krishna’s earthly pastimes, is quieter, more meditative and more authentic in character than virtually any temple in the main circuit.
The priests at Chaurasi Khamba are hereditary custodians of the site’s oral tradition. Unlike many large temples managed by trusts, the Chaurasi Khamba is maintained by priests who carry a specific oral tradition about the site’s sacred spaces – including the exact location of the cradle room. Asking the priests to narrate the Putana story at the site itself is the most valuable thing a pilgrim can do here.
The Ratnamala-Putana connection across lives is one of the most striking karmic narratives in the Puranas – and almost never explained in popular accounts. The fact that Putana was the fulfillment of a righteous maternal wish from a previous life – Ratnamala’s desire to nurse Vamana – transforms the entire story from “demon defeated” to “ancient divine promise fulfilled.” Experience My India explains this at the site.
Mahavan is 15 km from Mathura, across the Yamuna – and many pilgrims skip it because they run out of time. The standard Mathura one-day circuit (Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat) fills a morning. Mahavan requires a separate afternoon or a second day. Experience My India plans the Gokul-Mahavan outer circuit as a dedicated half-day, not a rushed addition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Putana Uddhar Sthali (also called Putana Vadh Sthali or Putana Moksha Sthali) marks the exact location inside the Chaurasi Khamba (the 84-pillared Nand Bhavan) in Mahavan, Mathura district, where the 6-day-old infant Lord Krishna performed his first divine pastime – slaying the demoness Putana who came disguised as a nursing mother with deadly poison on her breast and granting her moksha (liberation). The site is approximately 15 km south-east of Mathura on the opposite bank of the Yamuna. Entry is free. Priests show the specific cradle room where the event occurred. Experience My India. The demoness Putana was sent by the tyrant King Kansa to kill all newborn infants in the Braj region. She disguised herself as a beautiful, benevolent nursing mother and entered Nanda Baba’s mansion in Mahavan (Old Gokul) where the 6-day-old infant Krishna lay in his cradle. She applied deadly Kalakoot poison to her breast and held the infant to nurse. However, Krishna – fully omniscient even as an infant – drew out the poison along with Putana’s vital life force (prana), slaying her. Crucially, because she had performed the external act of a nursing mother, Krishna granted her moksha (liberation) and the Bhagavata Purana states she received the status of a maternal figure in Krishna’s eternal abode. Experience My India. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Krishna granted Putana moksha because of the principle that any connection with the Supreme – even hostile – produces spiritual fruit. Though Putana came with poison and murderous intent, she performed the external act of a nursing mother offering milk to a child. The Bhagavata Purana states Krishna recognised this form of the act and honoured it with liberation. Additionally, Braj tradition holds that Putana was Ratnamala in a previous life – daughter of King Bali – who had genuinely wished to nurse Lord Vishnu as Vamana. Krishna fulfilled that original wish while granting liberation despite the current life’s hostile intent. Experience My India. Call +91-7302265809.
Putana Uddhar Sthali is located inside the Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan) in Mahavan town, Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh – approximately 15 km south-east of Mathura city on the opposite (eastern) bank of the Yamuna River. Mahavan is historically known as Brihadvan and is considered Old Gokul – the original site of Nanda Baba’s cowherd village where the infant Krishna spent his earliest days. To reach it, search “Chaurasi Khamba Mahavan” on Google Maps. From Mathura city, auto-rickshaws reach Mahavan via the Yamuna road bridge. Experience My India. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Chaurasi Khamba (“84 pillars”) is the name of the ancient stone-pillared structure in Mahavan traditionally identified as Nanda Baba’s mansion (Nand Bhavan) – Lord Krishna’s adoptive father’s home where the infant Krishna spent his earliest days. The 84 pillars of the structure are one of its most distinctive features; the number 84 is sacred in Braj tradition (84 kosh parikrama, 84 forests, 84 ghats). The structure contains the Putana Uddhar Sthali (cradle room) and deities of Nanda-Yashoda. Hereditary priests maintain active worship and narrate the site’s sacred history. Entry is free. Experience My India. Call +91-7302265809.
According to the Braj pilgrimage tradition, Putana was Ratnamala in her previous birth – the daughter of King Bali, the great Asura king who donated the universe to Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana (the dwarf avatar). When Ratnamala saw the beautiful child Vamana, she felt a genuine maternal impulse – she wished she could nurse and mother this divine infant. This righteous maternal wish was remembered by Krishna across lifetimes. In her next birth as Putana in the Dvapara Yuga, she was given the opportunity to approach Krishna – but her demonic nature caused her to come with poison. Krishna nevertheless recognised the original wish and granted moksha. Experience My India. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Mahavan is related to but distinct from the area called Gokul (near Mathura). Mahavan – historically known as Brihadvan (the great forest) – is considered the original, older Gokul settlement where Nanda Baba’s home (Chaurasi Khamba) is located, approximately 15 km from Mathura. The area near Mathura often called “Gokul” (where temples like Nand Bhavan on the Yamuna bank are located) is a related but separate pilgrimage zone. In the pilgrimage tradition, Mahavan represents the original Gokul of Krishna’s birth period – where the Putana leela and other earliest pastimes occurred. Experience My India navigates to both sites. Call +91-7302265809.
Putana Uddhar Sthali is the site of Lord Krishna’s very first divine pastime (leela) on earth – making it the beginning point of the entire Braj leela cycle. For devotional pilgrims, standing in the specific cradle room where the 6-day-old Krishna performed his first act of divine mercy is a profoundly significant experience. The site teaches that Krishna’s grace has no boundary – even an enemy who offered poison with murderous intent received liberation. The Bhagavata Purana uses this narrative as the foundational statement of Krishna’s unbounded compassion. Experience My India presents these teachings at the site during every guided visit.
