Kans Quila – also spelled Kans Qila, Kans Fort, or Kansa Qila – is an ancient fortress on the western bank of the Yamuna River in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Mythological Origins

According to the Srimad Bhagavatam and Vishnu Purana, King Kansa (Kamsa) was the ruler of Mathura – a powerful, cruel king whose fate was sealed by a divine prophecy that the eighth son of his sister Devaki would bring about his death. To prevent this, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudev in his fortress in Mathura, killing each child born to them until the night Lord Krishna was born – the eighth child – under extraordinary circumstances.

According to the narrative, on the night of Krishna’s birth, Vasudev miraculously carried the infant across the Yamuna (which parted at his touch) to Gokul, placing him in the household of Nanda and Yashoda. Years later, Krishna returned to Mathura, defeated Kansa in the Kamsa arena and liberated the city.

The site of Kansa’s prison – the Garbha Griha – is commemorated at the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, a few hundred metres from Kans Quila. The fort itself is associated with Kansa’s broader palace and stronghold complex that surrounded Mathura.

Historical Records

Beyond mythology, the physical fort has documented historical significance. The 18th-century Vaishnav scholar Narahara Chakravarti noted it as an ancient defensive castle in his writings on Mathura. Archaeological evidence and architectural analysis suggest the structure underwent significant modification during the Mughal period – the surviving stonework shows both ancient Indian construction techniques and Mughal-era additions.

Kans Quila is 200 metres from Vishram Ghat – most pilgrims who visit Vishram Ghat walk past it without knowing what it is. There is no prominent signage identifying the fort to visitors approaching from the ghat side. The Government Museum Mathura is more instructive for understanding Mathura’s pre-Kansa history than Kans Quila itself. Photography is permitted but the light quality is best in late afternoon. The fort faces roughly east-to-west with the Yamuna to the east. Morning light creates deep shadows in the interior ruins.
